WHY ORTHODONTICS?

Orthodontics is the oldest of the dental specialties dealing with problems caused by poor alignment of the teeth and jaws.

Its focus is beautifying the face by harmonizing the teeth, muscles, jaws, and jaw joints three dimensionally. Treatment means more than a beautiful smile; it can also aid the health of the teeth and gums.

An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has spent an additional three years in an advanced, intensive educational program to be certified in the science of facial growth and tooth movement from an accredited Institute.

In contrast to the general dentist, orthodontists limit their practice to the specialty of orthodontics in order to serve you better.

Any patient presenting following indications may need orthodontic treatment:

  • Unusual facial profile
  • Thumb and finger sucking
  • Overlapping and crowded teeth
  • Missing teeth
  • Spaced teeth
  • Protrusion of upper front teeth
  • Mouth breathing
  • Showing too much gum tissue when smiling

  OFF-SHOOTS OF ORTHODONTICS

Orthodontics in children below 10 yrs of age

Some children will require to be treated at younger age due to severity of their problem. Starting at younger age will help these children in achieving normal alignment of teeth and facial beauty, which is long lasting.

Early evaluation provides both timely detection of problems and greater opportunity for more effective treatment. When orthodontic intervention is not necessary, an orthodontist can carefully monitor growth and development and begin treatment when it is ideal.

Adult Orthodontics

Braces are not just for kids! In his practice, Dr. Patil treats all age groups, from children to senior citizens. Teeth can be straightened at any age and a new smile will last a lifetime.

It is never too late to seek the benefits of orthodontic care.

Begg vs. Straightwire Technique

Begg treatment philosophy is outdated and not practiced anywhere in developed western world. It is currently practiced only in pockets in India and third world countries on the pretext of being less expensive. Though it can be used to treat some not so complicated cases but due to latest advances in treatment methodologies practicing Begg philosophy is not considered state of the art in contemporary times.

Dr. Patil due to its severe shortcomings will not practice Begg treatment. Dr. Patil believes quality cannot be compromised on economic grounds. Straight wire in its various methodologies is the most advanced technique available and its practice would be advocated in Dr. Patil`s practice.

Cleft Lip And Palate Management

Orthodontics plays an important part in overall management of a child with cleft lip and palate. Dr. Patil provides orthodontic care for children with cleft lip and palate as a part of interdisciplinary management along with oral surgeon, pediatrician, plastic surgeon etc.

Metal Braces Vs Ceramic Braces

Metal braces are the most common type. They are made of medical grade stainless steel. Today's metal braces are smaller, more comfortable, and more attractive.Ceramic braces are made of translucent (clear) material. They are most popular with adult patients, due to their cosmetic appeal.
